Totnes Pride Goes Online and Back to Its Roots!

Proud2Be are bringing Totnes Pride celebrations online this year.

The social enterprise is laying on a whole host of events, which will bring the LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and/or questioning+) community together with their allies, to celebrate difference and increase understanding around issues that are still faced by the community.

On their website, Proud2Be invite all to ‘Join us this year to honour our individual and collective stories by Remembering Our Roots’.

Totnes Pride Online – which will take place from 31 August 2020 – 5 September 2020- will be jam-packed with a wide variety of workshops, talks and Q&A’s.

Events will include a DJ set, an inclusive sexual health Q&A, Drag Storytime, a Death Café, as well as young people-led discussions on how COVID-19 and gender stereotypes and expectations impact on their lives.

Maia Thomas, co-organiser of the Black Lives Matter Protest in Exeter will be discussing her involvement in the movement and how to be a better ally.

Volunteers are busy crocheting and with permission from the local council, will adorn railings, lampposts and bollards in Totnes during the week of Pride! You can share your photos of the art on social media with the hashtag #TotnesPride

Due to successful continuation funding from People’s Health Trust using money raised by Health Lottery South West, all events are free. For those who are able, donations will be gratefully received.

Inspired by their experiences of bullying, discrimination and shame- identical twins Max and Maya Price founded Proud2Be in 2011, by recording a video, explaining how they are both proud to be part of the LGBTQ+ community.

As well as hosting Totnes Pride, Proud2Be facilitates well attended and inclusive peer support groups, weekly youth groups, a family support group and a young people’s 121 support service. Proud2Be also delivers interactive workshops to students and awareness training to organisations and schools across the county.

Proud2Be celebrated recently, after being awarded £160,000 in National Lottery funding to support its work with LGBTQ+ young people and their families in Devon.

About this year’s event, Proud2Be co-founder Max said:

“We are extremely excited to take all that is fabulous about Totnes Pride and host an online event that reaches even more people, including those who, for whatever reason, haven’t been able to attend the event in the past.”
