Trans Writes is a website and organisation still in its infancy, but which has already managed to give almost £2,000 to creators from the community for their work.
Our goal is very simple; platform trans voices and make sure they are paid for their work. As such we created a website and accept pitches exclusively from transgender people. We currently pay a flat rate of £100 while advising contributors not to rip themselves off by writing more than around 1,000 words. We hope eventually to make the site fully supported on its ad revenue alone, however in the mean time we use Patreon to ensure we can put out at least one piece a month from a contributor.
Doing so we have managed to give a platform to voices from transgender people in Nigeria, Hungary and even managed to rope in a few actual celebrity and prominent transgender people such as Abigail Thorn and Arthur Webber.
Lee Hurley (Daily Cannon) and myself (Gemma Stone) are yet to earn any money from the site for ourselves, despite being the bulk of the content. But this is really a project of passion and love which we want to see succeed even if it means running at a loss for a few years. Trans voices deserve to be heard and they deserve to be paid for their work.
