Brixton Umbrella Circle

Brixton Umbrella Circle is an independent, peer led, self-help group for older (50+) LGBTQ’s. It offers a forum for mutual support, socialising and addressing individual and collective experiences (past and current) in a social, cultural and political context.

Umbrellas provide shelter and is used as a term for covering all – and because our hearts and minds can be like umbrellas – useless if we do not open them.

Since 2015 BUC has been combatting social isolation and exclusion by organising ways for older LGBTQ+ people to connect, socialise and support each other, through coffee mornings, pub lunches, discussions, workshops, intergenerational events, trips to museums and other events. Anything that people suggest. We have no fees, no funding, no formal membership and no bank account. You don’t have to live in Brixton and all older lgbtq+ people are welcome to join.

Since the early days of lockdown in march 2020 we have weekly zoom meeting. Through out the pandemic this provided an essential regular check in and we still meet this way every week.

We produce monthly emails inviting the circle to various local events, and have a Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/brixtonumbrellacircle (not many of our members use fb or social media).
