LGBTQ+ Intersections Conference

SAYiT announce LGBTQ+ Intersections Conference: working with LGBTQ+ people with intersecting marginalised identities. The conference will encourage collaboration in developing solutions to provide culturally competent holistic support for all who require it.

Date: Tuesday 12th March 2024
Time: 9.00am – 4pm
Location: Victoria Hall, S1 2JB

LGBTQ+ issues have been prominent in the media and political discourse in recent years and many of our organisations have had a greater focus on how best to support our LGBTQ+ service users and communities. Many of us have attended LGBTQ+ awareness trainings and worked to make our services more inclusive and accessible for LGBTQ+ people.

However, we frequently talk about the LGBTQ+ community, as if all LGBTQ+ people have a single similar experience, failing to recognise the diversity of our communities, or the specific experiences, needs and barriers faced by LGBTQ+ people with other intersecting marginalised identities.

There will be a range of speakers and workshops discussing the intersections of LGBTQ+ and disability, faith, age, class, race and family/parenting. The event is open to anyone supporting LGBTQ+ people, with particular relevance for those working in frontline youth and community and support services, education, mental health, and LGBTQ+ organisations.

Speakers include: Aderonke Apata – African Rainbow Family – ‘Intersectionality as LGBTQ+ People Seeking Asylum’,Sue Hammersley – ‘What’s God got to do with it?’, Harvey Kennedy-Pitt – Unstukk – ‘Embracing Complexity: Navigating the Intersectionality of LGBTQ+ Communities’, Dave Pike – LGBT Trade Network – ‘Demanding Workplaces that Celebrate LGBT+ Workers’, Joe Butler – ‘Supporting Autistic LGBTQ+ Children and Young People’, Dr. Lucy Jones – ‘Age and LGBTQ+ Experience’ and Heather Paterson – SAYiT. The afternoon will include a series of workshops.
