Being Ready Project

The ‘Being Ready’ project was set up to address the needs of trans, intersex and gender diverse people during all stages of dying, death and bereavement. We are creating evidence-based training for professionals who work with the dead, dying or bereaved so they are ready to meet everyone’s needs, and be more trans and intersex inclusive.

This project is being led by GIRES, in collaboration with Hospice UK and Stonewall.

In order to ensure that the training developed through this project is comprehensive and informed directly by the needs of trans, intersex and gender diverse people, the first stage of this project will focus on strengthening the evidence base on needs in relation to death and bereavement care via surveys. We will produce an anonymised summary of our findings.

The second stage of the project involves community consultation via small focus groups across England and Wales. We will also be consulting with relevant experts from both the LGBTQ+ sector and the funeral and bereavement sectors. We’ll be publishing a report of our findings.

Stage three of the project will be the development of an evidence-based training program, and a journal for trans, intersex and gender diverse people which will help them think about what their funeral wishes may be, and how they can plan ahead so that their wishes are honoured. The training will be rolled out and delivered by GIRES across England and Wales during phase four.
