Mermaids has been supporting trans children, young people, and their families since 1995. Mermaids has evolved into one of the UK’s leading LGBTQ+ charities, empowering thousands of people with its secure online communities, local community groups, helpline services, web resources, events, training, legal support, policy and stakeholder engagement and residential weekends.
We also seek to educate and inform wider society on gender identity by helping professionals accommodate and reassure gender diverse young people. Over the years, we’ve seen many changes in the language and understanding surrounding gender issues, but one thing remains the same: trans children deserve the freedom and confidence to explore their gender identity wherever their journey takes them, free from fear, isolation and discrimination.
PR and Media Manager Role Description
The young people, children and families that we support are at the heart of everything we do at Mermaids. As our work has expanded, so has the demand for engaging, informative and relevant external media content that reflects the lived experiences of our service users.
This role is responsible for feeding into and implementing the overarching PR and media strategy to push forward Mermaids’ strategic aims. This will include both proactive and reactive media relations working closely with the Head of Comms and Digital and the department Director.
You will have a keen eye for a story and be an excellent communicator across the board with a passion for effective communications, news, media and making key contacts. You will work closely with colleagues in communications, campaigns, fundraising, legal and policy, services and corporate engagement teams to amplify Mermaids’ work.
We encourage applications from those with lived experiences (directly or indirectly) and/or close ties to the LGBTQ community.
