About Us

akt is the UK’s national LGBTQ Youth Homelessness charity. We provide safe homes and support to ensure that no young person needs to choose between a safe home and being who they are. Currently 24% of young people facing homelessness in the UK identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender, and 77% cite abuse and rejection by their families after coming out as the primary reason for seeking help. The charity was founded in 1989 and operates service centres in London, Manchester, Newcastle, Bristol and works online through a digital service across the UK. akt has launched a new five-year strategy and seen significant growth in income generation and awareness over the previous five years.

The Team

This role sits within akt’s Manchester or London service centres as part of the People and Operations team and is supervised by the Director of People and Operations. Other members of the team include an Operations Coordinator (full time), and Operations Officer (part time) and an Events Officer (part time).

Job Summary

The Operations Manager will work closely to support the development of projects and processes within the charity so that new systems and approaches are embedded and have the best chance of success. The role will build excellent working relationships with both akt staff and external clients, suppliers and partners in akt’s four key cities. The Operations Manager will also provide day-to-day management of the Operations team and its outputs.

Duties and responsibilities
  • Establish and continuously improve office information systems and procedures to ensure an efficient and effective service, undertaking reviews of systems and procedures as necessary.
  • Line manage a small but busy hybrid working team who are based in London and Manchester.
  • Maintain and update operational policies & procedures and ensure implementation in line with best practice.
  • Manage contracts, licences and suppliers, including subscriptions, IT contracts and equipment purchasing.
  • Manage and maintain akt’s IT infrastructure, equipment allocations and use of office space, including managing the relationship with the external IT support agency.
  • Implement and oversee robust systems and processes to support successful delivery and resource management.
  • Manage the organisation’s compliance with and best practice across health and safety and data protection (working with data protection specialists as necessary) and play an active role in any related, internal committees.
  • Ensure akt has well-managed and adequate office spaces and facilities to meet the charity’s evolving needs.
  • Co-ordinate the transition of Microsoft 365, progressing a culture of accountability, and cross-organisational working.
  • Promote ongoing collaborative working across the organisation.
  • Oversee akt’s annual events calendar including line management of the Events Officer.
  • akt may from time to time require you to undertake additional or other duties as necessary, commensurate with the role.
