The history of Stonewall does not stand alone. LGBT+ rights stand on the shoulders of the civil rights movement, which shifted Western culture forever.
Martin Luther King Junior is quoted Injustice anywhere is a threat justice anywhere – We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. The black and the LGBT+ communities are intertwined in the fight for equal rights, justice and human dignity.
Join us as Elohor Hurley-Simister and Kevin Humphreys, of Jacobs, take us on the journey of what happened on Saturday the 28th June 1969 at the Stonewall Inn, meeting key LGBT+ activist Storme DeLarverie, Marsh P Johnson and Sylvia Rivera. Where we will explore how the roots, even the existence, of pride stems back to Black and Latino members of the LGBT+ community.
The webinar will then bring us to the present-day fight for equality, in all minority communities – discussing the overlap of our battles from laws and legislation to healthcare and HIV/AIDS.
When black lives, LGBT+ lives and black LGBT+ lives, particularly black trans lives, matter equally then, and only then, do we step closer to all lives matter.
